That dark episode in the City's history set the scene for thirty years of conflict, which heralded a depressing era.However, as the 1970s dawned, not all was doom and gloom in the Maiden City.On the evening of Friday, 20th March, 1970, Derry was thrown into wild celebrations when news came through from Dublin that local lad Charlie Nash had claimed the city's first-ever Irish senior boxing title.
Immediately, preparations were made in Nash's home town to welcome back their conquering hero. That Saturday afternoon, he was duly paraded through Derry and acclaimed by the thousands who had gathered there to greet him.
