RIP 'Dazzler' Darren Sutherland

This morning I was awoken by my mother who broke the news that Irish boxing sensation Darren Sutherland had died under tragic circumstances. I was completely shocked my first question was what happened? The second..Why? I know from losing my own sister under these circumstances how shocking and heartbreaking it is. That second question, why? Can never be answered but its the most hurtful one to ask and its one that will present itself time and time again. My heart goes out to Darren’s parents, family and friends.

I was a fan of Darren's along with the rest of the country all through the Olympics and his professional career, as a fellow Irish man and boxer, I was deeply saddened to know that he has left us now. What a thrilling fighter he was power streaming through both his fists like hammers he devastated many of his opponents with shots to the body and head. That is not to underestimate his boxing ability, style, skill and quick footwork he had it all. As Barry McGuigan said 'I would describe Darren as a phenomenal talent.

The excitement in the middleweight division for Irish boxing had never been this exciting in all its history, John Duddy, Mathew Macklin, James Moore, Andy Lee... May they all up their game now and bring the middleweight title back to Ireland in the memory of a great talent in Darren Sutherland. My thoughts and prayers are with Darren’s parents as all Irish boxing fans would be right now.

REST IN PEACE DAZZLER
